Instead of talking with the real mother about anything, say "'I don't really mind what you do, as long as you don't make a mess.'"

Instead of talking to the real mother about "the/our/this/-- house/apartment", say "'It is a very old house, you know? A long time ago there were not just small flats, but one big 'flat' consisting of the whole house! You can still see that, there is for example that wooden door in the drawing room which has been bricked up!'"
